Situated in the heart of the lush and fertile Pembina Valley, Carman and the RM of Dufferin offer numerous summer and fall activities for foodies with a taste for the great outdoors.
Picking Juicy Manitoba Berries
Fill your pails, pies, and pantries with a visit to Prairie Adventure Farm, a 10-minute drive northeast of Carman. Prairie Adventure Farm offers five varieties of sweet and sour baking cherries, three different raspberry varieties, and even asparagus. Fall visitors can even harvest pumpkins! Visit the Prairie Adventure Farm website for products, prices, and growing season information.
Only 10 km south of Carman is Graham’s Groves, where you can pick the saskatoon berries Carman is known for. A homestead since 1878, Graham’s Groves offers u-pick saskatoon berries, black and red currants in July, chokecherries in August, and raspberries August 15 until the first frost. Well-treed and grassy picnic areas offer a place to rest and perhaps sample the fruits of your labours. Visit the Graham’s Groves website for products, prices, and growing season information.
Since you’ll likely be picking in an open berry patch without shade, it’s best to bring the following:
Classic Comfort Food
Visit Homestead Co-op for everything you need for a park picnic — grocery, produce, deli, baked goods, and even fresh, handmade sushi from a professional sushi chef. Then settle in at King’s Park to eat, play at the outdoor tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, baseball diamonds and the outdoor pool, or simply find some shade, kick back and enjoy the foliage.
Stop and Smell the Flowers
Plan your garden and admire the view at Vanderveen’s Greenhouses, famous for supplying Manitobans with bedding plants and poinsettias for more than 30 years, with over 20 acres of greenhouse space offering a dazzling array of plants. Visit the Vanderveen’s website for public hours.
Peruse the perennials, fruit trees, and more at Aubin Nurseries Garden Centre. A Manitoba mainstay, Aubin has been growing a stellar selection of plants since 1927 and features over 500 acres of evergreens, bedding plants, shrubbery, and more.
Time for a midday treat? Head over to 1st Avenue for Crazy Lady’s Cafeteria & Takeout for hearty home-baked goods and a variety of take-out items, made fresh from scratch daily.
Finally, immerse yourself in nature with a stroll down Carman’s Community Pathway. Winding through the community, the multi-use path features a river walk that follows the meandering Boyne river. The pathway is perfect for walking, jogging, and biking.
Dine al Fresco
Enjoy the fresh air while taking in the retro character of days gone by with a trip to the famous Syl’s Drive Inn. Syl’s has maintained the authentic look, feel, and service of a traditional drive-in, while serving up classic favourites like burgers, subs, and seriously thick shakes.
If you’re not up for burgers and fries, head over to McGee’s Family Restaurant for sandwiches, salads, wraps, chicken fingers, and more.
